Why We Help
Can you imagine how embarrassing it would be to be the one in the classroom without paper, pencils or folders? What if your parents had been unable to afford what you needed for school? Would you have felt sad, disappointed, embarrassed, angry, or left out? Unfortunately, on average 1,000 children in Manitowoc County have experienced exactly how it feels to go to school unprepared. These students start at a disadvantage, which limits their chances for success. That’s why KAN Cool for School a 501(c)(3) was formed in 2004 – to assure that all Manitowoc County children have the school supplies they need.
KAN relies on local school systems to identify the children in need who are invited to the annual event. Every August, an average of 1000 children and their parents come to our drive thru event where we give out $25.00 Office Max gift certificates and backpacks.
In addition, KAN volunteers pack and deliver cases of school supplies to the Manitowoc county schools that request them. Throughout the year, teachers draw supplies from the “Magic Closet”, being careful to protect the privacy of the recipients.
The program costs about $35.00 per child in need which comes to $30,000 per year. KAN relies on donations from individuals, businesses, community organizations and grants. Your donation will help make a difference in a child’s life!

In addition, we stock area schools with supplies for distribution to children in need our program may have missed.
